Both United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have urged Israel to change its attitude towards the Palestinians.
Clinton yesterday called on Israel to make "difficult but necessary choices" for Middle East peace. But she added that US support for Israel's security is "rock solid."
A day earlier, Ban had called on Israel to lift its blockade of the Gaza Strip. The two officials, the most senior in global diplomacy, however, failed to say what would happen if Israel shunned, which is expected, their calls to commit to the peace process and lift the siege of Gaza. Israel has been faced for ever with such polite calls and "advice" to embrace peace. And every time it has usurped more Palestinian land. There is hardly any land left for the Palestinians to set up their aspired State.
We would like to think that the secretary-general and the secretary of state are serious about achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. We are not asking them to confront Israel that would be asking for too much, right? What the Arabs are asking for is that Israel be dealt with as per international norms. The colonies' issue is a very serious one. So is the crippling blockade of Gaza.
They should be referred to the UN Security Council. This, Mr Secretary-General, is in your hands. Or is it in the hands of Mrs Clinton? Whatever ...
