When the UAE took the decision to be part of the workings of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), it was for a long-term strategic goal. Realising the important role that renewable energy would play in the future, the country took the correct decision to engage with what Irena is attempting to achieve.

Renewable energy is perhaps one of the areas that have not received what they deserve in terms of attention and allocation of funds. This is mainly due to the high cost of spreading it within any given country. And hence, many governments have stayed away from heavily investing in such a source even though establishing renewable energy projects is part of the UN goal of providing sustainable energy for all by 2030.

Yet it is only realistic to say that without prior planning, it may be a goal that could never become a reality. The UAE has made renewable energy a priority as today’s main sources of energy will soon be depleted. In 2010 the UAE Cabinet approved the signing of an agreement with Irena with the organisation’s headquarters being based in Abu Dhabi.

This was definitely an achievement not just for the UAE but also for the field as well. Given the country’s commitment there have been budgetary allocations for investment and research into renewable energy. Irena is also looking to enhance education and training opportunities in the field of renewable energy across the globe.

One of the most important goals is the promotion of renewable energy in developing countries. This is important as it directly affects the livelihood of these nations, especially given that many have limited or no access to energy sources. It is also expected that about four million direct jobs will be created.

Renewable energy is integral to development of nations and progress of countries. Without support and commitment, goals that could improve the lives of the millions would remain just dreams.
