Nothing can be more exasperating for a motorist in Sharjah than finding himself stuck behind a row of trucks during peak hours, sometimes not even being able to see the overhead signal. And if this occurs during the morning rush hour, one can be forgiven for cursing under one's breath. Motorists have been reassured time and again about the steps being taken to tackle the congestion caused by trucks, but not much seems to have changed. The Sharjah Police has banned trucks from using roads inside the city during certain hours. But this is being violated regularly. As penalty, the trucks have been fined.

However, this has not deterred trucks from using the roads. This is because they have found that coughing up a fine is a small price to pay than not delivering their goods on time. The government must act quickly to make the roads safer and less congested. A campaign to educate truck drivers and imposition of steep fines can be a good starting point.
