The weather is changing, and flooded roads will not be uncommon across the emirates in the next few days.

Already drivers in Sharjah have had to contend with slippery and wet conditions as downpours resulted in pooling on the roadways.

But the lesson for all drivers is clear: Drive according to road conditions. There are always the foolhardy who insist on tailgating, speeding, changing lanes at a whim and showing scant regard for all others using the roads. It's no wonder that the accident rate, despite the best efforts of authorities, remains one of the highest in the region.

Driving safely in the rain isn't rocket science. It means slowing down. It means clearly stating your intentions by leaving lots of room and using your indicators. And it means being fully attentive.

For once, this rainy season, let's try to reduce the number of accidents by following these simple measures.

And slow down.
