Getting a national identity card isn't a personal preference — it's a legal necessity. The reality, though, is that the process for issuing cards has been cumbersome which resulted in many residents of the UAE simply ignoring the process, hoping that it will go away. It'll not.

By this time next year, obtaining an identification card will be a far easier process, with new machines being able to print cards virtually on the spot — as long as your biometric details are on file.

The Emirates Identity Authority has taken great strides in streamlining their processes, from an initial appointment and barcode scheme to one-stop quick issual. In addition, the new machines will largely eliminate the need for courier or pickup services. In effect, there can be no excuse for not getting a card. Once the new machines are up and running and the entire process runs smoothly, mandatory possession of the cards must be enforced.
