In the face of justified military strikes against militants who orchestrate brutal killings, maimings and executions and claim to be the self-nominated ambassadors of Islam, comes a public intervention and condemnation of their actions from Muslims across all spheres of society. The manner in which everyday Muslim people have been quick to condemn and disassociate themselves and their faith from the actions of Daesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), is praiseworthy. It reflects the true face of Islam, a religion immersed in the tenets of love and mutual respect.

Using traditional and social media, young Muslim men and women in the United Kingdom have rebuked the actions of Daesh and appealed in human terms, in a manner specific to the teachings of Islam, asking the extremists to question their conscience and renounce their ways. One such movement is #NotInMyName, and it questions the legitimacy of the militants’ actions. The global campaign against Daesh now has an added legitimacy, thanks to the actions of these young Muslim men and women. Ordinary Muslims have denounced them, which means that half the battle is already won.
