More stringent measures required
There has been an increase in cases of drivers jumping red lights and causing fatal crashes.
The increase in the number of accidents caused by motorists jumping the red signal is a matter that needs to be urgently addressed. A comprehensive approach needs to be adopted when looking at the issue. This is being said given the number of such accidents in the past few weeks, which have led to deaths.
The most recent of such accidents has resulted in the deaths of two people and the injury of six after a car jumped the red light and crashed into a tourist vehicle.
The overall number of cases of drivers jumping the red light may well be low, especially when the number of incidents in the entire year is examined. But still, having so many accidents within a short period of time highlights the need for additional action.
When cameras were mounted at some intersections, the idea was to identify those breaking the law. But cameras should also assist in eliminating the frequency of such accidents.
Perhaps it is time that new measures are adopted and more stringent action is taken in order to prevent drivers from endangering the lives of others.
