The recent decision by the concerned authorities to step up monitoring of the quality of service at restaurants and cafeterias in Ajman is a welcome step. Such food outlets will come under intense scrutiny as part of an inspection campaign to be carried out during Ramadan. The campaign is a joint effort among various entities which will carry out inspections and surprise visits.

Yet the habit of ensuring food safety should not be an occasional course of action that is followed only during the month of Ramadan. It should also not be limited to one emirate. Ensuring food safety through inspections and surprise visits should be a best practice standard that is adopted by all the concerned authorities across all the emirates and throughout the year. In fact, eateries that abide by the best standards should be awarded for their best practice and presented as an example to follow.
