It is in the hands of the US and Russia to chart a way out of the current crisis
The body count never stops. The stream of blood continues to flow. Corpses of mutilated children have become common sights of everyday life. This is a bloody price being paid by thousands of innocent people. Syria has turned into a symbol of tragedy and agony.
After so many months of confrontation between the Syrian regime and protesters calling for freedom, there seems to be a deadlock. The killings have not stopped and a way out of the crisis seems impossible to achieve. There is a serious flaw in how the international community is addressing the problem in Syria and this will surely have grave ramifications, especially for the people.
This incident comes following the massacre in Al Houla last month that had left dozens of children and women dead. The UN investigators had placed the blame on pro-government gunmen, a charge that was denied by the Syrian regime.
Has anything really changed in Syria during the course of the conflict? The violence has gotten worse as villages and towns are being pounded with heavy weapons. The civilian death toll is on the rise, with children being targeted.
The Syrian regime is, in its delusional state, blaming the so-called ‘terrorists’ for the crimes being committed by its own security apparatus.
Having said that, it is justifiable at this moment to question Kofi Annan peace plan, even though it is the last resort to solve the conflict. As a matter of fact, charting a way out is mainly in the hands of the US and Russia, both of whom are playing a key role in how the events in the country are unfolding. Therefore, has the time not come to stop the bloodshed?
