In defiance of international law, Israel plans to extend its railway into occupied Jerusalem. The light-rail system will start operations in April.

The plan disregards the fact that the city is occupied and will certainly further complicate the already complicated direct peace talks. But Israel can always be counted on to come up with such destructive, unilateral steps, which derail talks and shatter hopes for peace.

The irony this time is that the Arabs have ignored Israel's provocative expansion of its de facto control of the city.

The Arab League, supposedly the guardian of the Palestinian cause, remains silent on the issue. This will boost Israel's plans to Judaise occupied Jerusalem, which started with demolishing Palestinian houses, building thousands of units for Jewish colonists, cancelling Palestinian residence visas and subsidising the living costs of Jews who move to the city.

The Israeli plan must be stopped. Otherwise, there will never be peace in this part of the world.
