Greater safety on school buses
RTA's decision to ensure the security of pupils should also focus on seat belts.

It's been a long time in coming, but at last the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recognised the need for greater safety on school buses. Although the safety record is not as bad as the reputation would make out, there still has been a need to improve conditions, including the standard of driving, to ensure the security of children while travelling to and from school.
A number of measures has been introduced, which must be in force by the end of 2008, by which time the RTA expects all transport firms providing school bus services to standardise operations in conformity with the legislation.
Those areas needing modification have been highlighted in a manual, yet apparently no attention has been paid to the need for safety belts for passengers. Most importantly, these belts must be secured to the floor, not the seat, to ensure passenger safety. After all, parents expect their wards to be in safe hands.
