Good for health and environment
Getting people to walk instead of using cars will cut greenhouse gas emissions
Any initiative that takes vehicles off the road and reduces carbon emissions is a good thing. And if people walk more, then that's even better. A recent study of residents in Abu Dhabi found that only 15 per cent of those living downtown currently walk to work. If the city's Urban Planning Council has its way, this number will double over the next two decades.
With 40 to 60 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions coming from cars in the city, getting more people walking will significantly cut this damaging level.
By making streets wider, more shade will allow for a cooler walk to and from work. With wider and flatter speed bumps, pedestrians will be able to cross streets more easily. And putting out park benches and street furniture will also entice people out of their cars. Environmental action comes down to thinking globally and acting locally.
