Zero tolerance is the only approach to fight the scourge of sexual harassment of women in the workplace. Though official data of such instances may be difficult to come by, due to the potential embarrassment of the victim, there are indications that there is a problem of harassment that needs addressing.

Let us be crystal clear about this; even a single case of harassment is one too many.

Apart from the obvious emotional distress caused by the perpetrator, there is also an economic price to pay. Bullying and harassment take an emotional toll on the person subjected to them and their working ability will certainly suffer.

The United Arab Emirates enjoys a dynamic economy and women are a vital part of that success story. If they feel in any way threatened in the workplace then the organisation they work for will will suffer financially.

Harassment also hinders the progress of women. If their employer tolerates or turns a blind eye to harassment they will quickly lose confidence in their management. The country cannot fulfil its destiny without the enthusiastic participation of women in all walks of life. There are no excuses that would allow any form of sexual harassment. Where it exists, it must be eradicated.
