Tonight, as 2013 draws to a close and the New Year is upon us, hundreds of thousands of revellers will be out and about across the UAE joining in the fireworks, festivities and celebrations. But while it is a time of joy, it is also a time where care and attention need to be applied.
There is a danger that some revellers may get out of hand. They must avoid the temptation to drive while under the influence of alcohol. There can be no excuse for drink driving. Extra police patrols are on the roads to target those who do not get this message.
And police patrols will also be targeting those who ignore safety to line local highways and busy roads, two and three vehicles deep, simply to catch a glimpse of the fireworks.
Authorities have made ample free public transport available for all to be able to enjoy the celebrations — and if you are going out to participate or simply watch, leave your car at home. Above all, have a happy New Year.
