Great change often begins with small actions. The world needs to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, which are not a sustainable source of energy and a major contributor to global warming.

Cars, which contribute significantly to global emissions, are an important part of modern life, especially in countries like the UAE where residents enthusiastically make use of vehicles for work and play.

Today is car-free day in the UAE and all motorists should make an effort to be part of an initiative which will not only reduce the carbon emissions of the country, but also give them an opportunity to think about their unconscious reliance on cars. Reducing the unnecessary use of their vehicles will bring about savings for motorists and also greatly benefit the environment.

Car-free day is also an opportunity for many to use the country’s public transport system, which in many places is a cheap and efficient way of getting around.

Those UAE motorists who join in the car-free day, will be part of a global initiative that will be observed internationally on Saturday. Next year, even more must be done to promote this day among residents

Hopefully car-free day will not only be a one-off event for many residents, but rather the start of a change in lifestyle from an unconscious motorist, to an environmentally-responsible commuter.
