The Philippines' new president has set his sights on his predecessor and her officials
Philippine President Benigno Aquino has raised the ante after assuming office by accusing five government agencies of mismanagement and corruption and asking for a probe into their activities.
The president's actions have now raised the bar as far as the moral stakes in government are concerned. If and when he finally signs an executive order which, in his words, will create a ‘Truth Commission', then the proverbial cat will be set amongst the pigeons. Among many high-profile politicians who will then come under the spotlight of the investigators will be former president Gloria Arroyo.
Calling for government authorities to curb expenditure shows that Aquino is tightening the purse strings. Clearly, the head of state has realised that the best way forward is to set the right example.
Aquino's logic is simple but should resonate powerfully amongst the masses: the money of the people should be spent for the nation.
