The recent step taken by the Abu Dhabi authorities to reveal the real prices behind the consumption of water and electricity in the emirate is welcome. Beginning next year, Abu Dhabi residents will have additional information added to their bills — the actual cost of their consumption. The intention is to make residents aware of the amount of subsidies the government provides in order to cover the cost.

The government covers at least 50 per cent of total costs — a fact that many residents may not be aware of. Revealing these numbers is important as it ensures transparency with regards to the system. In addition, it comes as an eye-opener for consumers on the real costs entailed in any utility usage. Hence, this approach will hopefully encourage consumers to be conscious of the scarcity of these resources and follow best practice in preserving them.
