Innovation and commitment are at the forefront of Abu Dhabi’s push for excellence in health care and the emirate is approaching this mission in commendably diverse ways. Apart from instituting best practices on the home ground, it is also pursuing best practices with premiere medical institutes in the world, such as the Children’s National Medical Centre (CNMC) in Washington, that is having an international impact as well. The centre is one of the most prestigious facilities for paediatric care in the world and Abu Dhabi’s valuable partnership with it for over 15 years is resulting in cutting-edge research and treatments that not only benefit Emirati children, they also help enhance international child care. The symbiosis between Abu Dhabi and the CNMC is evidenced by the fact that a screening for congenital heart disease in newborns developed at the institute, has saved the lives of 13 babies born in Abu Dhabi hospitals in 2011, the first year of its use. The partnership also offers training programmes to university students in Abu Dhabi, giving them world-class exposure to the medical field. In all these measures, the big picture is clear — Abu Dhabi’s vision 2030 is well on track.
