1992 Britain’s World Boxing Organisation (WBO) super-middleweight champion Chris Eubank handed America’s punching postman Tony Thornton a first-class defeat in his fourth title defence. The 26-year-old Eubank retained his crown with a unanimous points success over the dangerous Thornton to extend his unbeaten run to 33 fights. But the busy Eubank knew he had been in a fight after his ninth contest in 22 months. He said: “This man was a tough. He stayed there for my biggest shots. I have nothing but admiration for him.” It was typical of the enigmatic Eubank that he rose to the occasion against one of the best men in the division, just as he had done against compatriots Nigel Benn and Michael Watson. Eubank’s combinations in the opening round were frequent and sometimes breathtaking, carrying power and speed. But such an impressive start was bound to take its toll and the New Jersey postman kept walking forwards to get back in contention.
