Al Mumtaz floating restaurant at Al Boom Tourist Village during the opening in Dubai. - Gulf News Archives

1997 - The 300 diners who ply the Creek every evening savouring fine food on tranquil dhow cruises will from now on be joined on the water by up to 150 guests. The Al Boom Tourist Village opened the floating restaurant, Al Mumtaz, which is a luxuriously rebuilt 28-year-old dhow. The restaurant is the latest development in the village’s ongoing expansion and tourism drive. The resale value of a solid second-hand dhow is clearly a better investment than a new car. The converted restaurant was built in India in 1969 for Dh120,000 and purchased in 1997 by the Al Hareb family, owners of the village. Adel Baban, assistant general manager of Al Boom, said the boat has traversed the waters between India, Africa and Dubai for 22 years.
