China, Vietnam leaders discuss territorial dispute

1992 - Chinese Premier Li Peng started an historic visit to Vietnam and launched into discussions of territorial disputes which strain relations between the two communist nations. Li is the first Chinese premier to visit Hanoi in 21 years and was welcomed with a red carpet, an army band and a military honour guard. His arrival marked a high point in relations since China and Vietnam normalised ties in November 1991 after more than a decade of hostility, including a brief war. At the initial meeting on territorial disputes both sides merely agreed on the need to find a mechanism to resolve the differences. Vietnamese foreign ministry spokeswoman Ho The Lan said these sea and land disputes would take time to clear up.
