Train crash kills two in Spain
2002 - A train crash in the northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia killed two people and injured more than 100. The crash involved a Euromed express linking the Mediterranean cities of Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante and a regional express train. They collided at Torredembarra station, north of Tarragona, derailing several carriages. “The regional train, for reasons which are not yet known, crossed from the branch line onto the main line on which the Euromed train was travelling,” Miguel Corsini, head of the rail company, said. He said an investigation would determine the speeds of the two rains and the reasons for the crash. Forty-one injured were still in hospital in Tarragona and Barcelona. Firefighters were alerted to the crash and were quickly on the scene.
