King Hassan II quits League post

1986 — King Hassan II of Morocco resigned as President of the Arab League due to the adverse reaction from some Arab countries to his surprise summit with Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres. Hassan had been President of the Arab League, which includes 21 nations and the Palestine Liberation Organisation, since a summit in September 1982. It was during that summit in Fez, Morocco, when the Arab leaders agreed on their basic conditions for peace with Israel — an Israeli withdrawal from lands seized during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and recognition of the PLO. Hassan asked Peres during their talks if he would agree to those two conditions. The King said Peres refused. The King resigned following the unfavourable reactions received from his hosting of Peres.
