1993 - His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, officially opened the American University of Sharjah (AUS). Addressing the audience at the Grand Theatre, Dr Shaikh Sultan said: “AUS would be an important educational centre, which would contribute greatly to development throughout the Gulf region. It is the beginning of a new, distinguished era in the field of education.” The universities, he added, should be real training centres and workshops, producing graduates who can easily integrate with the community and develop it. He urged universities to develop their research and development centres in order to be able to interpret national strategies and policies and putting them into action.
