Liverpool lift Dubai Cup after penalty shootout

1986 - Liverpool lifted the Dubai Super Cup after sinking Celtic 5-3 in a penalty shootout. Fifteen thousand fans saw Scottish marksman Mo Johnston thump his spot-kick against a post to end the “Best of British battle” at Al Wasl Stadium in Dubai, in favour of the English champions after the scores had ended 1-1 at full-time. “It was just one of those things,” said second-half substitute Johnston whose penalty miss was matched by teammate Owen Archdeacon seconds later. Liverpool were right on target in the best-of-five shoot-out with Steve McMahon, Jim Beglin, Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol all netting from the spot while only Paul McStay and Peter Grant grabbed goals for Celtic in the breathtaking finale.
