US and Japan strike deal in auto talks

1995 — Japan and the United States reached an agreement in auto trade talks just hours before an American deadline for record sanctions against Japanese cars. “Japan has agreed that it will begin to truly open its auto and auto parts market to Americans,” US President Bill Clinton said. “This agreement is specific. It is measurable. It will achieve real, concrete results.” He said Washington would drop its threat to impose sanctions against $5.9 billion (Dh21.7 billion) worth of luxury Japanese automobiles, which would have come into effect at midnight. In return, Japanese Trade Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto said that Tokyo had dropped its complaint against the US before the World Trade Organisation, the global trade policeman.
