US and China sign a nuclear pact

1985 - European nuclear energy firms vying for Chinese contracts worth millions of dollars were preparing for a tough challenge from US and Japanese rivals after Peking and Washington clinched a nuclear pact. The long delay in signing the US-China nuclear cooperation accord had prevented American firms from bidding for contracts in China’s ambitious civil nuclear energy programme and hindered Japanese licencees of US equipment. China announced plans to build about 10 nuclear plants worth up to $20 billion (Dh73.56 billion) by the end of the century to meet a chronic energy shortage. The agreement was initialled during President Ronald Reagan’s visit to China last year, but signing was delayed because US legislators were concerned about adverse intelligence reports.
