From December 6, you will be able to renew your driving licence or pay traffic fines from any emirate in any other emirate. This is a move which is long overdue, and one which will be welcomed by every driver countrywide. And there will be no additional charge to avail of this service.

The move will also greatly standardise the appearance of driving licences and vehicle registration cards across all emirates, gradually and effectively removing the hodgepodge of documents issued by all seven authorities.

The new cards will also feature security details, making them essentially tamper free and removing the temptation for those to forge or use them for illegal ends. And if you owe a traffic fine in one emirate, you no longer have to travel there to pay your dues.

This streamlining and modernisation of the driving licensing system is to be welcomed. It is a progressive move, one which benefits all motorists.
