The wonderful and captivating world of cinema made its way back into society in Saudi Arabia last week. The screening of the comedy Manahi - starring Saudi star Fayez Al Malek - was the first in three decades.

This is being regarded as an important turning point in Saudi culture since the form of entertainment was banned 30 years ago.

The right kind of cinema provides its viewers with an invaluable education apart from being a constructive form of relaxation.

The medium of cinema is itself not a problem; it is the context and platform on which the messages that they carry are delivered.

Care and sensitivity must be illustrated to ensure that messages, contradictory to the tenets of Saudi society, carried through films are not in conflict with the foundation that binds the social, cultural and religious values of the country.

If this form of entertainment is associated with this expectation then viewing films could become a worthwhile social pastime.
