The future of Syria will be dependent on how its people come together as a single force that brings about a long-awaited change. What the country needs most though is that a clear blueprint for the future is outlined and followed.

At the recent Arab League meeting in Qatar, Syria’s seat was occupied, for the first time, by a figure from the opposition. Symbolic as this may seem, it is an important indication as it gives the movement an official stance amongst its Arab neighbours. It also clearly signals that the current regime is no longer perceived to be likely to survive under any condition.

The head of the Syrian National Coalition, Muath Al Khatib, in his address at the summit focused on the needs of the opposition and the suffering of the people. He also urged for further assistance to be given to the opposition.

Perhaps what is most significant is the fact that Al Khatib has highlighted the fact that the conflict in Syria has become more complicated and brutal as a result of the interference of other parties and countries in the country’s affairs.

There is no question that freedom has a price and that change on many occasions brings with it unforeseen circumstances and factors.

Yet, in any given conflict, the most important factor that should enable a group of people to overcome difficulties is that they should stand united in their fight against injustice.

And for the Syrian opposition, this will be the most important step to be taken.

Without a unified front, the dream for a democratic and stable Syria will just be an illusion. Hence, the opposition today needs to unite in spirit and principle as their current fragmentation will only fuel the longevity of the current regime.

Having said that, there is also a grave responsibility on the part of the international community to step up its efforts to stop the bloodshed. Without that, Syria will actually be a nation fighting a civil war.
