Turkey's repeated attacks on northern Iraq should stop. The sovereignty of Iraq must be respected by Ankara, whose problem with the Kurdish rebels can be addressed through coordination between the two governments.

These attacks have aggravated regional tension at a time when there is already a messy American-led war taking place in the very same country.

It is understandable that the Turkish government wants to counter Kurdish rebels given Turkey's legitimate security concerns but seeking a military solution will undoubtedly make matters worse, especially since the diplomatic route has not been fully exhausted.

At this point, Iraq does not need another military problem to deal with, even if Turkey has been given the US green light - not to mention the fact that continued attacks will certainly have a major impact on oil prices and the economy.

Iraq has offered to clamp down on the rebels and it should be given the chance to deliver.
