Sharjah residents will be asked in the next few weeks to voice their opinion and effectively participate in drawing the future of transport in the emirate. The survey is part of a comprehensive plan aimed to upgrade the roads network, increase the use of public transport, reduce congestion and boost anti-pollution efforts. “Sharjah Comprehensive Transportation Plan is considered a key, a major strategic option for the emirate as it will definitely contribute to develop the transportation system so as to make public transport a preference for the public, to reduce the use of private vehicles and to enhance public transport in addition to eliminating environmental pollution,” said Shaikh Khalid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, member of Sharjah Executive Council and chairman of the Directorate of Public Works.

The survey will determine not only the existing traffic patterns, but also reflect the emirate’s need for potential development. Therefore, residents must take this exercise seriously and consider it a national duty. Residents’ opinion will help authorities determine transportation preferences, peak times for vehicle use and preferred routes and modes of transportation. Those who keep complaining of traffic congestion and shortage of public transport now have their chance to be part of a process that will greatly improve the emirate’s transport system. This commendable move by the Sharjah authorities is part of a long-term plan — the 2030 strategy. Citizens and residents have a chance to be part of it.
