The recent study on parenting that showed the low level of parents' involvement in bringing up their children is alarming. There should be a course of action to correct this.

The study, carried out by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority and the Dubai School of Government, found that maids take care of children in between carrying out household chores and cooking. The study has warned that such a trend will have a serious impact on the development of a child, emotionally and intellectually.

There is no question that the fast-paced lifestyles and changes in society have led to a greater dependence on maids to assist in homes. Yet this does not mean that parents have permission to abdicate their responsibilities towards their children.

It is critical that parents be educated on the dangers of leaving their children unattended and the importance of spending quality time with them.
