We live in a nation that brings together people from all over the world to live and work together, enjoying the benefits of a modern, pluralistic and socially integrated society based on common values and ideals of respect for all. It is one where the Leadership of the nation, all levels of Government, and those who serve and are sworn to protect and keep us safe, do so with unbridled enthusiasm and unparalleled dedication to duty. And the results are clear.

Statistically, we all live in one of the safest places on Earth, a nation where overall crime rates are exceedingly low, and where the annual murder rate is just 0.3 per cent per 100,000 of population. According to Lt General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, the Deputy Chairman of Police and Public Safety in Dubai, we live in the nation with the lowest murder rate on the planet. That is a bold statement and one that we all should take pride in. It is one that speaks to the effectiveness of policing combined with the social policies in place that bring harmony and ensure a safe and secure environment.

When it comes to road safety, however, the numbers are less satisfactory and Government at all levels — along with those involved in police, traffic and road safety management — are determined that the fatality rates will be reduced by 50 per cent this year, with similar gains to follow.

Given the determination to improve safety on our roads and the very low level of fatal crimes, we should all take a moment to reflect on how blessed we are being able to call the UAE home. And long may that continue.
