Dubai has a long and enduring maritime history stretching back hundreds of years. It grew as a trading port, a key staging post between East and West.
The traditional pearling industry brought prosperity as pearl traders travelled throughout the Gulf in search of the treasure.
This proud heritage is front and centre of an interactive exhibition at Dubai Heritage Village in Shindagha that wraps up today. The exhibition, being held for the past three weeks, has been funded by DP World and has proved popular.
The exhibition includes photographs that highlight the activities that made Dubai a city of merchants, trading in gold, spices and textiles. It also includes priceless interviews with people who were eyewitnesses to Dubai’s development and shaped the city’s maritime and trading prosperity.
It is a pity that this great attraction is ending today. While the elements will be online, if there is any way the exhibition can continue, many will gain from it. It is a shame this exhibition is not a permanent feature.
