It is everyone's duty to ensure children's safety on the road, and people should make it a top priority especially given that traffic accidents last year left 11 children dead and 141 injured in Dubai.

With this grim fact in mind, it is really encouraging to learn of a major campaign called "Mama I am home" by a private group, aimed at educating schoolchildren on how to conduct themselves safely on the road. It complements the awareness campaigns already launched by the police and Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

This approach of addressing serious issues about traffic safety from an early age will spread awareness to a wider group of people and hopefully reduce traffic violations against children on the road.

It also lets the little ones know that they can make a difference.

Let us hope this campaign will also compel parents, bus drivers and people in general to pay more attention on the roads.
