It is important that schools are inclusive of all students — including those with special needs. This could only be achieved through a systematic approach that introduces mechanisms which ensure the transition of students with special needs into the system.

The Abu Dhabi Educational Council (Adec) is seeking to implement a plan where all students will be given equal opportunities in the educational system. "Integrating our students with special needs into Abu Dhabi schools is an essential component of Adec's 10-year strategic plan for developing the educational system in the emirate," said Dr Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, director general of Adec.

For the past two years, 1,500 students with learning and speech difficulties have been integrated in Abu Dhabi public schools. This has come following the success of integrating 616 students previously. Undoubtedly, the success of any integration process can only be achieved through a gradual and inclusive programme.
