The abuse and exploitation of women in any way, shape, or form is a scourge that is endemic in most parts of the world. It is carried out with impunity and many organisations have been proactive in trying to find a coherent policy and other substantial ways to counteract this and empower women.

The UAE too plays an active part in this field and the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWC) is one such organisation that seeks to provide care and assistance to abused women in the UAE regardless of their status in the country. Abused women withdraw into a shell. They believe that they are responsible for their condition, especially in cases of domestic violence. It is a psychological reaction brought about by social and cultural stigmas.

The victims must be empowered to find an equal place amongst men in civilised society. This is their fundamental right. Here is a telling statistic: across the world, on average, it takes at least 30 occurrences of abuse for a victim to report it to the authorities. This figure could be compounded in conservative societies. It is everyone's duty to ensure that the cause of empowering women is a triumphant one.
