The current turmoil in Egypt should not take the country back to where it was almost two years ago. The Egyptian people have taken numerous steps to bring about meaningful change to their nation. A long-term process will require all forces to come together and agree on the best mandate forward.

People will continue to hold the right to peaceful protest. The government is also responsible for ensuring that not only people are given the opportunity to express their opinion but, more importantly, that they are not reprimanded or punished for such a course of action.

It is therefore condemnable that one of the protesters was beaten and stripped naked by half-a-dozen policemen simply because he was taking part in a demonstration. The office of President Mohammad Mursi had stated that it was investigating the incident.

This incident is a reminder of the brutality shown by the same forces under the previous regime. And it is these type of images that bring Mursi’s leadership under question.
