Watching a building on fire is nerve-wracking. Fighting it is another matter, though. The firefighters of Dubai did a stellar job in containing and then dousing the fire that raced through the Address Downtown Hotel in Dubai on New Year’s Eve. The fire started around 9.30pm, with just two-and-a-half hours to midnight, when Burj Khalifa opposite was all set to put on a spectacular display of fireworks. There were a number of factors at play that night: First, ensuring the safety of residents of the hotel. Second, making sure there was no panic among the thousands who had gathered to watch the fireworks, that could lead to a stampede. And third, the fire had to be controlled quickly so that the show could go on.

The response from the Civil Defence was commendable. The work was done with precision. The personnel went from floor to floor, rushing up the stairs and evacuating people. Firefighting, rescue and salvage are extremely exhausting operations, physically and mentally. They are a battle of nerves. These men fought bravely to protect lives. Crowd control was at its best, with residents realising the need for discipline. Once lives were safe, firefighters battled hard to ensure the evening’s entertainment would not be affected. They emerged victorious as the world watched.

The efficiency with which the firefighters brought the blaze under control proves that they are a well-trained and skilled squad. They are highly motivated and have the spirit to battle against the odds. These are men who risk their lives daily to save the lives of others. They are the unsung heroes. They deserve our admiration, respect, appreciation and recognition.
