Cycling in Dubai is moving from being the domain of the fitness fanatics who cycle hundreds of kilometres every weekend, to becoming a normal part of life for a much larger number of the city’s residents. The government plans to build an exciting 850 kilometres of cycling tracks in a network that will cover the city, which will allow many individuals to cycle to and from work. Thus making the use of cycles into a widely accepted means of transport, which is both environmentally-friendly and also far more healthy than sitting in a car.

But the government needs to be supported by others. Employers should introduce shower facilities in every work place so that people can relay on daily cycling without worrying about their subsequent appearance and comfort in the office. Dubai should also introduce a system of public cycles, available to anyone, as happens in London or Amsterdam.

The dedicated cycle lanes need to be respected by motorists while cyclists should respect traffic rules.
