When Israel comes under attack in the United Nations or by international human rights organisations, it is because of its continuous aggressive policies and unacceptable behaviour against the only remaining occupied people today, the Palestinians.

Israel continues to shun all efforts to achieve a just settlement in the Middle East by adopting expansionist policies and suffocating the life out of the Occupied Territories.

So when Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he will stand against "anti-Israel rhetoric …whatever the cost," he surely is out of line.

In a speech on Monday at the annual conference of the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism in Ottawa, the Conservative leader said he "got bruises to show" for defending Israel. Harper was likely referring to Canada's failed bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council last month. UN insiders suggested that the Harper government's blind support of Israel especially during the Israeli war on Gaza last year and the attack on the Gaza aid flotilla in September was a likely reason for Canada's failure to gain a Security Council seat for the first time since the UN's creation.

What is more significant is that Canada, because of Harper's policies, is losing more than a Security Council seat. It stands to lose the trust and friendship of other nations, especially in this part of the world.
