The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has decided to change the method of identifying roads from the present system of numbering by area and street, to the more familiar and friendly one of street names only.

Although some main roads in an area do have a name and number, the inner roads are identified by area and street number only, which can cause confusion as some roads are not numbered consecutively.

When the numbering system was first introduced, it was pointed out by some that only in a city like New York, which has a grid system based on its blocks, would numbering be workable.

Time has shown these detractors to be right. Now a change is indicated, but it will be a slow process likely to take many years. One thing is sure, though, and that is it will be worthwhile exercise in the long run.
