The fact that smoking is injurious to health has not deterred a large number of people worldwide. Although their number is shrinking globally, the UAE, unfortunately, has its fair share of smokers.

The latest call by Abu Dhabi residents to issue an emirate-wide ban on smoking is a fresh reminder on this issue. What bothers residents most is the lack of concern among certain smokers on how their habit affects others. Therefore, a large number of non-smokers become passive smokers just because they happen to be there or passing by.

These incidents happen in cafes and other outlets where both smokers and non-smokers share the environment. Then there are lobbies, foyers and elevators where the smokers leave their mark that affect small children.

The UAE has banned smoking in enclosed public places since 2009. However, that still leaves a wide area for smoking — something that the authorities are looking at bringing under the smoking ban. However, this move requires a strong commitment from key stakeholders.

A nationwide awareness campaign is needed to change the ‘uncaring behaviour’ of smokers who do not think of the well-being of those who do not smoke. This should be extended to labour accommodations and premises where low-paid employees reside.

The health authorities could rope in private sector corporations to sponsor these awareness campaigns to share the burden as part of their corporate social responsibilities as they are the employers of a majority of these workers.
