There is no question that this year will be an exceptional one for the Federal National Council (FNC). The upcoming elections would mark a significant development for the institution and would define its future progress and role.

The release of the preliminary list of 469 members of the Electoral College brings them closer to the election date. It is obvious from the list of candidates that there is a variety in terms of gender, age and backgrounds. This is a positive development as it offers voters a wider choice.

As candidates will soon start their campaigns, it is important that they adopt the right approach and more crucially, offer an agenda that would best serve the needs and requirements of the people.

Candidates should be practical in what they promise voters as the FNC does not exist in isolation of other institutions and its workings are directly linked to its surroundings. Understanding the mechanisms within which the FNC functions would serve as a plus point for any candidate.

It is crucial that all candidates move ahead with a sense of responsibility — not only towards their voters but also towards the society at large. After all, it is for this reason they would be judged to be eligible and suitable for the FNC.
