The initiative recently announced by the General Secretary of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) of planning to employ women in its headquarters' various departments is a positive move for the organisation. "There will be women employed in the departments of media, family affairs, economic exchange, settling international disputes and the like. Women will be given equal rights with men in almost all sectors," said Atta Al Mannan Al Bakhit, assistant secretary-general of the OIC for media affairs.

It is a fact that women in the Muslim world have excelled in various fields. This has been the case in many areas including politics, science and technology, economics, management, as well as the arts. The real issue that is at hand here is not of allowing women to take up jobs within the organisation's structure. Rather, it is ensuring that women's proven capabilities and talents are fully utilised to the maximum.
