Muscat: Oman yesterday welcomed the new UN Security Council resolution to rid Syria of chemical weapons, saying that it was necessary to start negotiations between the Syrian government and the opposition.
“My country welcomes the consensus that has been achieved in the Security Council on the Syrian chemical weapons by adopting unanimously Resolution 2118 (2013),” Yousuf Bin Alawi Bin Abdullah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, said at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly, which entered its sixth day on Monday.
The 15-nation UN Security Council last Friday night unanimously adopted a resolution which is aimed at ridding war-torn Syria of chemical weapons. “It is necessary to convene Geneva II Conference for the negotiations between the Syrian government and the opposition forces and we believe that the goal of these negotiations are to lead to the ceasefire and the formation of a Transitional Authority with necessary powers to enable it to overcome the enormous problems caused by war for approximately three years,” he said, according to a report by Oman News Agency.
“We also believe that the international community should look forward at this time to provide the support and humanitarian assistance to the displaced Syrians and to all affected by this war,” the minister said.
