Manila: A vice mayor of southern Luzon's town survived an assassination attempt in a mall in suburban Pasay City, police said.

Vice Mayor Florencio Manimtim Jr., vice mayor of Talisay town in southern Luzon's Batangas survived three wounds in his back which he sustained when shot at by one motorcycle-riding gunman at the parking lot of the Mall of Asia before noon of Thursday, Pasay City police chief superintendent Melchor Reyes said in a radio interview.

"He was then on his way to his car. He is now recuperating at nearby San Juan De Dios where he was rushed," Reyes said.

Two men served as a look-out for the lone motorcycle-riding gunman, said Reyes, in a report that quoted eyewitnesses.

Manimtim's guards could not shoot back since their firearms were deposited at the mall's entrance, said the same report.

In August last year, Manimtim survived an ambush which killed his bodyguard at a cemetery in Talisay.

He was then Talisay's mayor, a post he held for nine years.

Local government officials are prone to political vendetta in the Philippines.
