Manila: Manny Pacquiao has taken his seat as a newly elected Philippine congressman and quoted American poet Robert Frost - and famed sports announcer Michael Buffer - in his first House speech.
Pacquiao, who will fight former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito in November after winning the May national elections, promised to work to uplift his southern home province from poverty that he too had risen from.
He says he knows what it feels to be without a home and "I know what it's like to go hungry."
The new congressman first quoted a line from a Frost's poem Stopping by woods on a lovely evening, saying: "The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep".
Pacquiao caused laughter among fellow lawmakers by imitating silver-tongued Michael Buffer: "Let's get ready to rumble!"
The 31-year-old passed a high school equivalency test in 2007 and recently enrolled in legislative courses.
