Manila: A soldier was killed and another wounded when a grenade was lobbed by two men on a motorcycle, at a military detachment in the southern Philippines late Wednesday, sources said in a late report on Thursday.

Corporal Rey Osoteo was killed and Private first Class Dionisio Malic was injured when the grenade exploded in front of them. The incident happened inside the military detachment in Osias village, Kabacan, North Cotabato at 8:40 on Wednesday night, Lt. Col. Domingo Gobway, commanding officer of the Philippine Army's 7th Infantry Battalion, said in a radio interview.

The attackers sped away on a motorcycle and were not arrested, Gobway said, adding the attackers were members of "lawless groups" composed of former rebels who have resorted to extortion.

They have been reacting to the Army's campaign against criminality in North Cotabato, said Gobway.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Soldiers recently found a bomb near a bus terminal in Kabacan.

Mindanao is home to separatist guerrillas, including  terror groups, one of which has links to Jemaah Islamiyah, the Southeast Asian conduit of the Al Qaida terror network.
